  1. JUPITER RUN - An acrylic painting on a 16 x 20 size canvas board, circa 2000. It was a spare time painting.

It may seem to you, from all the "spare-time" artwork that you see on my website that there were many times when I must have had no jobs on hand, but that was not so. I began my full-time carreer as an illustrator in 1974 when phone calls and letters started coming in regularly, soliciting artwork from me. I used a spare room in my home as a "studio" and had a bulletin board on which I pinned up all the assignments as they came in. For the 20 years, until the day I retired, there was never a day when there were less than 4 or 5 assignments pinned up on that board. At one time I remember counting 14 assignments waiting to be done, and worrying whether I could meet all the deadlines.

The spare times came when I was about to start on the next job but had no enthusiasm for any of the assignments pinned up on that board. And, if I was confident that I could take a day or two off and draw or paint something I had in mind, and still get back to those assignments and meet the deadlines, then that's what I did. So, actually, I should not call them "spare-time" paintings, I should refer to them as "time-out" paintings. They never caused me to miss a deadline.
